Key Questions and Answers

Q: What is a capacitor and how could its failure affect delivery of therapy?

A:  The capacitor is a component that stores electrical energy for the defibrillation shock. If a capacitor failure were to occur, the device might not be able to deliver a shock, or it might deliver a shock with insufficient strength. In either case, the device would not be able to deliver effective defibrillation therapy.
