Philips Webinar on Health Reform Draws Nationwide Audience

May 5, 2009

The May 5 installment of Philips’ “Reimbursement Simplified” webinar series featured former CMS acting administrator Leslie Norwalk, Blue Cross Senior Vice President Alissa Fox, and Cheryl Austein Casnoff, associate administrator for Health Information Technology at HRSA. Medical providers from throughout the US heard about the key issues that policymakers in Washington are now wrestling with on health reform.

Among the key points offered by today’s speakers:

  • Health reform is moving quickly in Washington, with key Congressional Committees and the Obama Administration aiming for final enactment in 2009.
  • One of the key proposals under serious consideration is creation of a Medicare-like government-run insurance plan that would compete with private health plans.
  • Other policy changes being considered as part of health reform include comparative effectiveness research, value-based purchasing, and pay-for-performance requirements, as well as mandates that all Americans have health insurance.
  • The cost of implementing a broad system of health reform will ultimately be one of the most critical factors in determining whether such a proposal is enacted.
