Senators Ask GAO to Monitor CMS Choice of Imaging Accrediting Organizations
December 5, 2008
The leaders of the Senate Finance Committee have asked the Government Accountability Office to monitor how CMS chooses and evaluates imaging accreditation organizations under the recently passed MIPPA (Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act) law.
The new Medicare law requires providers of advanced diagnostic imaging services, including CT, MR, Nuclear Medicine, and PET, to be accredited by 2012 in order to receive payment for the technical component of those services. CMS must choose which organizations will do the accreditation by January 1, 2010.
The letter was signed by Senator Max Baucus, Chairman of the Finance Committee, and Senator Chuck Grassley, who is the ranking Republican on the panel.
