CMS Announces Medicare Physician Fees for 2008

CMS has announced its 2008 fee schedule for physician services provided to Medicare beneficiaries. The rates go into effect on January 1, 2008. Among the key provisions included in the fee schedule are the following:
- Total payments of $58.9 billion to about 900,000 physicians
- Further transition to reimbursement of practice expenses based upon actual costs
- Increased payment for physicians who report specific measures on quality of care
- Modification of enrollment standards for independent diagnostic testing facilities
