RSS Feeds

What is Really Simple Syndication?

With so many web pages out there, keeping up to date with the information you want can be a drag.

Wouldn't it be easier to have the latest news and features delivered directly to you, instead of clicking from site to site?

RSS - "Really Simple Syndication” - is a simple way to ‘feed’ you notifications of new and changed content on different websites.

How does RSS work?

RSS allows you to see when sites, from all over the internet, have added new content. You can get the latest headlines and articles (or even audio files, photographs or video) in one place - as soon as they’re published - without having to remember to visit each site every day.

How can I start to get RSS news feeds?

The first thing you’ll need is an RSS reader (also known as ‘RSS aggregator’ or ‘news reader’). This is a piece of software that checks RSS feeds and lets you read any new articles that have been added to them.

There are many RSS readers available.

  • Some are accessed through a browser
  • Some are integrated into email programs
  • Some run as a standalone application on your personal computer.

Once you have chosen a reader, all you have to do is to decide what content you want to receive by finding and subscribing to the relevant RSS feeds. The method for downloading an RSS feed depends on the reader you select. RSS feeds are flagged with an orange button showing the letters "XML" or "RSS".
