CMS Regulation Sets Outpatient Payments for 2008

CMS today issued a final regulation that sets Medicare payment rates and policies for hospital outpatient services during calendar year 2008.  It also updates Medicare payment rates for services provided by ambulatory surgical centers. 

Among the key provisions of the outpatient regulation are the following:

• An estimated overall average increase of 3.8 percent in Medicare payments for outpatient services in calendar year 2008.
  
• Expanded efforts by CMS to link payment increases to hospital reporting on specific outpatient quality measures
