Intensivist-led Care Team

Leveraging scarce critical care resources

"…Mortality rates are significantly lower in hospitals with ICUs managed exclusively by board-certified intensivists. Research has shown that in ICUs where intensivists manage or co-manage all patients versus low intensity there is a 30% reduction in hospital mortality and a 40% reduction in ICU mortality.”

Intensivists managing care in the ICU has been demonstrated to save lives.  But it is often an almost impossible goal to achieve or afford.

The eICU Program establishes a remote, 24x7, intensivist-led care model. This approach helps health systems leverage their scarce intensivist resources by expanding their reach across the entire system.  Run by a centralized, intensivist-led team of critical care specialists treating or co-treating ICU patients, the eICU Program has been proven to reduce severity adjusted ICU mortality and length of stay.

Within a single facility or health system, critical care units may differ in their physician coverage models, patient acuity, and available resources. The eICU Program accommodates this variability with remote staffing of intensivists and critical care nurses from the

Eicu Triange Care Model

hospital/health system, complimenting in-house staffing schedules.
For example:

  • Intensivists may be on-site from 8 AM until 6 PM, maintaining responsibility for patient care plans, while the eICU team provides coverage from 6 PM until 8 AM. This scenario has the dual advantage of maintaining expert oversight during off-hours and improving the lifestyle of the on-site intensivists.
  • In cases where there are no dedicated intensivists, the eICU Program can provide 24x7 patient monitoring, supporting the admitting physician and consultants who cannot be in constant attendance.
