Our framework for delivering patient-focused Developmental Care to mother and child
What is it? A new and simpler way to communicate about and teach Developmental Care, based on the published Universe of Developmental Care (UDC) and Core Measure literature (see link on the right). The overlapping petals of the model demonstrate the integrative nature of Developmental Care. The petals represent the Core Measures of Developmental Care and the items on the inside represent key factors that should be considered when caring for a patient. Those include:
· Protected sleep
· Pain and stress assessment and management
· Developmental activities of daily living: positioning, feeding and skin care
· Family-centered care
· The healing environment
Why do we need it? Nurses and Neonatologists told us Developmental Care in the NICU is really important to them, so the team at Philips Mother and Child Care worked closely with clinicians for 18 months to create an updated and more useful Developmental Care model.
Does it work? In recent testing with clinicians in all units across the Mother and Child Care continuum – from pregnancy to the early years of life – the new Developmental Care Model was met with rave reviews. Clinicians could not wait to share it with the staffs in their units.
Bottom line? The new Developmental Care model will allow Philips Mother and Child Care to partner with clinicians, to support them in providing the best care possible for their patients. We at Philips want our customers to feel understood and empowered.
