The following tutorials will be free-of-charge for nurses in honor of National Nurses Week 2009 and NTI (National Teaching Institute and Critical Care Exposition)

End Tidal CO2 Monitoring and Resuscitation (1 CEU)

This program has been approved by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN).  Measurement of the end tidal carbon dioxide (EtCO2) value, coupled with use of the continuous, real-time measure of EtCO2 via the capnography waveform, or capnograph, provides a powerful diagnostic tool in the evaluation and treatment of a variety of clinical situations. The primary focus of this presentation is on the use of both the EtCO2 value and the capnogram in the evaluation and treatment of patients experiencing potentially life-threatening resuscitative events, however a limited selection of other capnography clinical applications is also shared. In addition, the speaker offers guidelines about how to use EtCO2 to guide decisions about patient selection for resuscitation treatment, and secondarily, how use of this information helps to channel communication efforts around end-of-life issues.

Shock: Signs, Symptoms, Treatment and Prevention (1 CEU)

This module describes how to recognize the signs and symptoms of shock and the treatment and prevention measures to reverse or slow the progression of this common, life-threatening condition. Applying basic patient care skills for handling cases of shock in the hospital or in other health care settings is detailed. An in-depth description of the cardiovascular system and the role of perfusion are provided as a foundation for understanding the underlying causes of shock. Discussion of the eight types of shock and their respective treatments is given.

Breast Cancer Overview (2 CE)

This module is designed to give the participant a general overview of breast cancer. Upon completion the student will be able to distinguish between the basic forms of breast cancer and understand its various stages of development.  Additionally there is a review of the most common detection techniques (including self-examination) and a discussion on the ever-expanding variety of imaging technologies.  Finally, there is an introduction to surgical and drug treatment options available.

Engaging Older Adults in Evidence Based Fall Prevention (1 CEU)

Numerous studies document falling as a common and preventable source of morbidity, mortality and health care expenditures.  The most successful fall-prevention interventions are multi-factorial requiring the expertise and collaboration of several disciplines.  Effective intervention also requires particular expertise in engaging older adults to modify their habits.  These factors combine to make fall-prevention services particularly difficult to provide within the constraints of clinical care.  This audio-visual/webcast  presentation will summarize the conceptual model successfully used in randomized clinical trials to facilitate the efforts of clinicians and older adults to efficiently and effectively reduce the risks of falling.

* Offer valid from 4/1/09 to 5/31/09

The following tutorials will be free-of-charge for Radiology.

Adventitial Disease (0.5 CE)

This learning exercise provides information regarding cystic adventitial disease of the popliteal artery. By reviewing the medical history and test results of several diagnostic modalities, the characteristics of this pathology are examined.

  • Describe the role of ultrasound in the assessment of cystic adventitial disease of the popliteal artery
  • List the typical ultrasound findings of cystic adventitial disease of the popliteal artery
  • Identify the typical signs and symptoms of cystic adventitial disease of the popliteal artery
  • Discuss other pathologies that may be considered as a differential diagnosis for cystic adventitial disease of the popliteal artery

Gastrinoma of the Pancreas (0.5 CE)

Referring to an actual clinical case, this course includes information on normal and abnormal anatomy of the pancreas and surrounding structures.  Specifically, the clinical symptoms, location and ultrasound findings of a pancreatic gastrinoma are discussed.  Treatments options for islet tumors and gastrinomas are included as are imaging modality options for defining tumors of the pancreas.

  • Identify the location and surrounding structures of the pancreas
  • Classify and describe tumors of the pancreas
  • Discuss the sonographic findings, clinical symptoms and location of a pancreatic gastrinoma
  • Describe other imaging modalities important in identifying tumors of the pancreas
  • Summarize treatment options for pancreatic tumors discussed in this case

* Offer valid from 4/1/09 to 6/30/09
