2.Do I need to perform maintenance on my defibrillator?
The HeartStart (also branded Heartstream) defibrillator’s Owner’s Manual suggests performing a monthly visual inspection of the defibrillator, supplies, accessories and spares
to ensure that there is no obvious physical damage and that those components with an expiration data (e.g. pads, batteries) have not expired.

The HeartStart defibrillators employ daily, weekly and monthly self tests to help ensure the devices are ready for use during an emergency. A failure of any of these tests will be shown by the status indicator.

3.How do I set up my defibrillator?

Each HeartStart or Heartstream defibrillator has specific setup instructions. Please review your Owner’s Manual for information on defibrillator setup, battery installation and pads/cartridge setup.

Please click here for an electronic version of your device’s owner’s manual.

4.Can I use my defibrillator on a wet or metal surface?

It is safe to defibrillate a patient on either a wet or metal surface as long as the appropriate safety precautions are taken. Specifically, care should be taken to ensure that no one is touching the patient when the shock button is pressed.

Please click here for detailed information on defibrillation on a wet or metal surface.

5.When should I use a defibrillator?

Our defibrillators are designed to treat someone you suspect may be a victim of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA).

A person in SCA:

  • does not respond when shaken, and
  • does not breathe normally.

If in doubt, apply the pads. Follow the instructions for each step in using the defibrillator.

Please click here for further information on indications for use for your devices.

6.What rhythms are considered shockable by the AED?

Our defibrillators are designed to shock ventricular fibrillation (VF) and certain ventricular tachycardias associated with a lack of circulation, including ventricular flutter and polymorphic ventricular tachycardia (VT.) Heartstream/HeartStart defibrillators use multiple parameters to determine if a rhythm is shockable.

Note: For safety reasons, some very low amplitude or low frequency rhythms may not be interpreted as shockable VF rhythms. Also some VT rhythms may not be interpreted as shockable rhythms.

7.What does it mean if the AED says "analysis interrupted" during a use?

The AED has detected artifact from movement or patient handling that is interfering with the AED’s ability to analyze the patients' ECG.

2.When does my battery expire?

If you install your battery by the “Install by date” your battery will last 4 years in standby mode (5 years typical for FR2 series.) If battery is installed after this date, the life will be less than 4 years.

3.How do I know when my battery needs to be replaced?

The HeartStart (also branded Heartstream) FR2 series (FR2, FR2+), FRx and HS1 series (HeartStart Defibrillator; Home and OnSite) Defibrillators use long-life Lithium batteries. When a low battery is detected, the unit will start chirping and the status indicator will change from the ready for use state.

The FR2 battery history will provide you with information about the use of the battery currently installed on your HeartStart FR2.

Please click here for instructions on how to check your battery history.

FR2+ manual, battery history

The "i button" on the front of the HS1 and FRx device will provide you with the status of your battery. Note these defibrillators use chirps and a flashing "i button" to alert you to problems.

Please click here for or further information on battery usage.

 Battery Usage Technical Note

4.What causes a battery to drain?

Each of the batteries are designed to have a 4 year life in standby mode (5 year typical in FR2.) This time is reduced when the device/battery is in use or delivering shocks. In the case of the FR2 series, the battery is specified to provide 720 use minutes or 300 shocks or a minimum of 4 years in standby (5 years typical.)

Standby mode means that the battery is installed but is not used, only self tests are being performed. The standby life will be reduced if your device is used on a patient or if it is used for training purposes.

2.How do I tell if my FR2 data card is full?

The amount of time remaining can be verified via your device’s first menu screen. The following steps will help you determine this.

  • Remove and reinstall battery. (Make sure you are using the regular gray battery, not the yellow Training and Admin pack and verify that your data card is installed.
  • Summary data card information should be displayed on the screen.
  • Use this information to determine if you need to download data or if the remaining time is acceptable.

Once the data card is full, the data card will stop recording data. Until files are deleted, or removed from the card, a full card will not record any data.

2.Can I train with an actual device?

Yes, you can with the correct training accessories for your device (e.g. training pads.) We have accessories available to help you train with your device.

Please contact your local Philips representative or click here to purchase training accessories for your device.

3.Why can’t I get past the “attach pads” voice prompt in training mode (HS1 & FRx)?

You may have this issue with training pads for a number of different reasons:

  • training pads are being used with a mannequin without an internal or external mannequin adapter,
  • clinical pads are being used rather than training pads,
  • pads placement on the mannequin is incorrect,
  • your training strip is worn or broken,
  • mannequin issues when using internal mannequin adapters.

2.I cannot read data from my HS1 or FRx. The connection times out or says communication failed. What's wrong?

  • The "best" distance between the Infrared (IR) adapter on the PC and the IR port on the HS1 can vary. One PC and HS1 combination may work best at 5 inches, and another may work better at 15". If you get communication errors, try increasing or decreasing the distance until the devices can communicate successfully.

  • In some cases Windows XP will be able to identify and install the correct drivers for your IR adapter. In other cases, XP may install the wrong driver. (for example the Actisys IR 4000U) In those cases, follow the IR adapter vendor's instructions for installing the correct drivers. The incorrect driver may seem to be identical in all behavior to the correct one except it won't transfer the data correctly.

  • Windows XP needs a minimum of Service Pack 2 installed for most IR adapters to install and work correctly. Contact your help desk to find out if you have the service pack installed.

3.I don't have your software yet and I need to print the ECG immediately. What can I do?

You can download the free, version of our software - Review Express - by clicking here.

Review Express will read your AED data, let you view the ECG on the screen, and print the ECG. For more functionality including the ability to add patient information, save cases for later use, and emailing cases to colleagues, see our other Data Management products.

4.I am using the free Review Express software and I get the following error: "An unnamed file could not be found." What's wrong?

Review Express must be installed and run with an account that has "local admin" rights. Your help desk can assist in configuring your account for those rights.
