IntelliVue 802.11 Infrastructure

Bedside and transport monitoring on an industry-standard 802.11 a/g infrastructure

IntelliVue patient monitors can operate wirelessly on the Philips IntelliVue 802.11 a/g infrastructure. By using industry-standard protocols and network components, we are able to offer customers a cost-effective solution for flexible patient monitoring.

Philips IntelliVue 802.11 Infrastructure provides two-way wireless communications between IntelliVue patient monitors and the IntelliVue Information Center. The 802.11 a/g infrastructure is an integral part of the IntelliVue Clinical Network and enables wireless transmission of all waveforms and parameters from the monitor to the IntelliVue Information Center.

Leveraging industry standards
Philips IntelliVue 802.11 Infrastructure can use either the 802.11a protocol in the 5 GHz band or 802.11g in the 2.4 GHz band. We also use off-the-shelf access points and switches to simplify configuration and manufacturing. Bedside adapters for IntelliVue patient monitors fit neatly inside the monitor cases.

Managing the network for patient safety
The patient monitoring environment has unique network requirements. Because patient status really can change in a heartbeat, it is vitally important to minimize delays in transmission and to avoid interference as much as possible.

The IntelliVue 802.11 Infrastructure can coexist with WMTS telemetry systems. It is not designed for use with or near other 802.11 networks that use the same spectrum. For example, enterprise 802.11b/g networks (2.4 GHz) can be used in the same space when our infrastructure is set to use 802.11a (5 GHz).

No wireless system can avoid interference entirely, but diligent frequency management in the facility can minimize the system’s vulnerability.

An integral part of the IntelliVue Clinical Network
The IntelliVue 802.11 Infrastructure is part of the IntelliVue Clinical Network which is designed specifically to manage the flow of time-critical patient monitoring data. Physical or logical isolation protects the entire wired/wireless clinical network from many of the day-today hazards of business networks, including viruses and transmission delays.

At the same time, the IntelliVue Clinical Network can maintain a controlled connection with the hospital LAN so that valuable patient information, such as lab results or PACS still images, can be delivered to the bedside monitor or central station without disrupting the flow of physiologic data or alarms.

It all works together
At the heart of the clinical network, the IntelliVue Information Center combines advanced patient surveillance capabilities with state-of-the-art clinical decision support tools. Web-based access enables everything from better informed consults to the remote ICU care model.
